If you’ve ever turned over a silver ring and seen a tiny “925” stamped inside the band, you’ve run into a 900-year-old standard. The number refers to the alloy: 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper. That ratio was set in medieval England and it’s now the global definition of “sterling.” Here’s how that happened, what the stamps mean, and why your necklace clasp says what it says.
What does “925” actually mean?
The number 925 means the piece is 92.5% silver by weight. The remaining 7.5% is almost always copper, sometimes a small amount of other metals. Pure silver—called fine silver, marked 999—is too soft for most jewelry. It scratches, bends, and won’t hold a clasp mechanism. The copper in sterling gives it enough hardness to be functional while keeping the silver’s color and tarnish behavior. A 925 piece is, by definition, sterling silver.
Why 92.5% specifically? Why not 90 or 95?
This is the question that makes the story interesting, and the honest answer is: we don’t know exactly who landed on 92.5, but we know when and roughly where. The standard was set in England under Henry II, around 1158. Henry standardized the English silver penny—the currency of the realm—at 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. The 7.5% copper was enough to make the coins hard enough to survive being carried in pockets and stacked in chests, without making them look copper-colored.
Why not 95%? Probably because at 95% the coins were still too soft and wore out too fast. Why not 90%? Because at 90% the copper started to show—the coins took on a slightly warmer tone and tarnished differently. 92.5 was the empirical sweet spot, found by trial and error, and nobody has had a good reason to change it in 900 years.
The U.S. silver dollar was 90% silver. The British sterling penny was 92.5%. The Mexican peso varied. Each country picked its own number based on what worked for its coinage. Sterling’s 92.5 won out globally because British trade spread it.
Where did the word “sterling” come from?
This is one of those etymology questions that historians still argue about, and I should be honest about that. There are three main theories.
The Easterlings Theory
The most commonly told story is that the word comes from the “Easterlings”—merchants from the Hanseatic League, the Baltic German trading cities, who came to England in the 12th century. Their silver coins were known for consistent purity, and English people started calling good silver “Easterling silver,” which shortened to “sterling.” This is the version you’ll read in most jewelry guides, and it’s plausible, but the documentary evidence is thinner than people admit. The word “sterling” appears in English records earlier than the Easterling merchants became prominent, which makes the theory shaky.
The Star Theory
A second theory ties “sterling” to the Old English word steorra, meaning “star.” Some early Norman silver pennies were stamped with a small star, and the theory goes that “starling” (little star) became “sterling.” The Oxford English Dictionary treats this as a possible origin.
The Old French Theory
A third theory connects “sterling” to the Old French esterlin, a term for a small coin used in Norman England. The word appears in medieval French texts referring to English silver.
None of the three is fully settled. The Easterlings theory is the most often repeated, but serious etymologists hedge. If anyone tells you they know for certain, they’re overstating the case.
When did silver start getting stamped with marks?
Stamping silver to guarantee its quality goes back to 1300, when Edward I ordered that all silver sold in England be tested and stamped at the Goldsmiths’ Hall in London. That’s the literal origin of the word “hallmark”—a mark applied at the hall. The early mark was a leopard’s head, the symbol of the English crown.
The reason for the law was fraud. Silver coins were being clipped (shaved around the edges) and counterfeited, and unscrupulous silversmiths were selling debased silver as the real thing. - Assay office mark: A symbol for the city where it was tested. London is a leopard’s head, Birmingham is an anchor, Sheffield is a crown (or a rose after 1975), Edinburgh is a castle, Chester was a city wall with three towers, Newcastle was three castles.
- Date letter: A single letter that corresponds to a specific year. Each assay office has its own alphabet cycle and changes the font or the punch shape to differentiate cycles.
- Duty mark: A sovereign’s head, stamped on pieces made during the years a tax on silver was in force (1784–1890). The duty mark was abolished in 1890.
If you can read all five marks, you can date a piece of English silver to the exact year and identify who made it. No other country’s silver system gives you that much information.
When did the “925” stamp become standard?
The numerical “925” stamp is more recent than you might think. England had been using the lion passant since 1544, and the U.S. legally required “sterling” or “925” only after the National Stamping Act of 1906. Other countries used different numbers: Germany and Italy commonly used “800” (80% silver), Scandinavia used “830S,” and Mexico used “980,” “950,” and “925” at different periods.
The international push toward a single “925” standard came with the Hallmarking Convention, signed in Vienna in 1972. The convention established common marks that member countries would recognize across borders. The “925” stamp inside a simple oval or scale became the most widely accepted.
Today, if you buy silver anywhere in the world, a “925” stamp is the standard signal that the piece is sterling. It’s not a guarantee—counterfeit stamps exist, especially on cheap online-marketplace jewelry—but it’s the starting point.

Why do some countries use 800 instead of 925?
Different countries standardized at different purities for historical reasons, usually tied to their coinage. None of these are “fake” silver—they’re just lower purity than sterling.
The trade-off is real. Higher-purity silver (950, 980) is softer and more lustrous but dents more easily. - Magnet test: Silver isn’t magnetic. If a magnet sticks, the piece has a steel or iron core. (Note: some clasps have steel springs, so test the main body, not the clasp.)
- Weight: Silver is dense. A genuine 925 piece is heavier than it looks. If it feels light or hollow, be suspicious.
- Tarnish: Sterling tarnishes (because of the copper). If a piece has never tarnished despite being “old,” it may not be sterling.
- The ice test: Silver conducts heat better than almost any metal. Put an ice cube on the piece and on a similar non-silver object. The ice on the silver should melt noticeably faster. This is a real test, not a myth.
- Acid test: The definitive test. A scratch on an inconspicuous spot, a drop of testing acid, and the color change tells you the purity. Most jewelers will do this for free or for a few dollars.

What’s the difference between “sterling” and “solid silver”?
This is a common confusion. “Sterling silver” means 92.5% silver, alloyed with copper. “Solid silver” is a vaguer term that technically means the piece is silver throughout (not plated), but it doesn’t specify purity. A piece stamped “solid silver” could be 800, 830, 925, or even lower. If a seller uses “solid silver” without a number, ask for the specific purity.
“Silver tone” and “silver finish” mean nothing. They describe color, not material. They could be polished steel.
Why is the 925 standard still the default after 900 years?
The honest answer is that nobody has found a better ratio. Sterling silver is hard enough to hold a clasp, soft enough to be worked by hand, takes a polish, accepts patina, and can be soldered and repaired indefinitely. Higher-purity alloys are too soft. Lower-purity alloys tarnish and look off-color. Sterling sits in the middle and works for everything from a $20 ring to a $20,000 tea service.
When you see “925” on a piece of jewelry, you’re looking at the end of an argument that started in 1158 and has never needed to be re-litigated. The standard outlasted the empire that created it, outlasted the coinage it was designed for, and outlasted the political system that enforced it.
