How to Edit Silver Jewelry Photos Without Making Them Look Fake

Editing silver jewelry is where good photos go to die. I have seen beautifully lit, perfectly focused silver shots ruined by heavy-handed retouching that made the metal look like plastic, or grey, or so bright it lost all shape. The goal of editing silver is not to make it look better than it is. The goal is to make it look on screen like it looks in your hand under good light. That is harder than it sounds, because screens lie and silver is subtle, and the easy edits are the ones that look fake.

This is my step-by-step editing workflow for silver jewelry, the one I use on every lhcjewelry.com/ product shot. I work in Lightroom Classic for 90 percent of the edit and jump to Photoshop only for cleanup that Lightroom cannot handle. The steps are in the order I do them, because the order matters. Doing them out of order creates problems you then have to fix.

Step 1: Start From RAW, Always

If you are editing silver from a JPEG, you have already lost. JPEGs throw away the highlight and shadow detail that silver needs, and the in-camera sharpening creates halos around edges that get worse when you edit. Shoot RAW. Edit RAW. Export to JPEG only at the end, at the size you need.

In Lightroom, the first thing I do is set the profile. For Sony files I use Camera Standard or Adobe Standard, not Camera Vivid, because the vivid profile pumps saturation and contrast in a way that makes silver look harsh. For Canon I use Neutral. For phone RAW, the default is usually fine. The profile choice at the start affects every edit after it, so get it right first.

Step 2: White Balance Off a Grey Card

Silver shows color casts like nothing else. If your white balance is off by 200 Kelvin, the silver will look warm or cool, and the customer will receive a piece that looks different from the photo. This is the number one cause of returns for color mismatch on silver jewelry.

I shoot a grey card in the first frame of every batch, under the same light as the jewelry. In Lightroom I use the eyedropper on the grey card to set white balance, then sync that white balance to every photo from the shoot. If you did not shoot a grey card, find a neutral grey area in the image, like a grey background card, and sample that. Do not eyeball white balance on silver. Your eyes adapt and you will convince yourself that slightly warm silver is correct when it is not.

Step 3: Exposure and Highlights

Silver shots usually need a small exposure adjustment and a significant highlight adjustment. I pull highlights down by 30 to 50 in Lightroom almost every time, because the brightest reflections on the metal clip even when the lighting is good. Pulling highlights recovers the detail in those bright areas without darkening the rest of the image.

Then I nudge exposure up or down by a tenth or two of a stop to get the midtones where I want them. The target is that the silver reads as bright but the highlights are not pure white. If you can still see a gradient in the brightest part of the metal, you are in the zone. If the brightest part is a flat white blob, pull highlights more or reduce exposure.

I rarely touch the shadows slider on silver. Silver shadows are supposed to be dark. Lifting them makes the metal look flat and grey. If a shadow area is too dark and you want detail, use a local adjustment brush, not the global slider, so you only affect the area that needs it.

Step 4: Whites and Blacks for Contrast

After highlights, I set the whites and blacks to give the image contrast. Hold the Alt key (Option on Mac) while dragging the Whites slider until you see the first clipping, then back off slightly. Do the same with Blacks in the other direction. This sets your black and white points, which gives the image its contrast range. On silver this matters because without true blacks and controlled whites, the metal looks muddy.

Be careful with the Blacks slider. Pushing it too far darkens the whole image and makes silver look heavy. I usually set blacks to about minus 20 to minus 30 and whites to plus 15 to plus 25. These are starting points, not rules. Every image is different.

Step 5: The Texture, Clarity, and Dehaze Trap

Here is where most people ruin silver photos. The Texture, Clarity, and Dehaze sliders in Lightroom are tempting because they make details pop. On silver, they are dangerous. Clarity adds midtone contrast, which on a smooth silver surface creates a gritty, crunchy texture that looks like the metal is scratched or dirty. Dehaze adds contrast and saturation in a way that makes silver look heavy and unnatural. Texture is the mildest of the three but still overdone easily.

My rule: global clarity stays at zero or slightly negative, like minus 5. Global dehaze stays at zero. Texture I might push to plus 10 for pieces with real surface texture, like hammered silver, but for smooth polished silver it stays at zero. If you want more detail in a specific area, like engraving, use a local adjustment brush with a small amount of clarity and texture painted only on that area. Never apply these globally to silver.

Step 6: Vibrance and Saturation, Barely

Silver is supposed to be neutral. There is no color to enhance. So why are we touching saturation? Because the background and any props might need a touch of life, and because camera profiles sometimes desaturate slightly. I set Vibrance to plus 5 to plus 10, never more. Saturation I leave at zero. Pushing saturation on a silver shot makes the background go garish and any color cast in the silver gets amplified.

If the silver has a stone set in it, like a turquoise or onyx, I might use the HSL panel to boost the specific color of the stone without touching the silver. That is a targeted adjustment, not a global one.

Step 7: Sharpening Without Halos

Sharpening silver is tricky because the edges between bright metal and dark background are high-contrast, and sharpening creates halos there that look awful. I use a light hand. Amount around 40 to 50, Radius 0.8 to 1.0, Detail 25 to 30, Masking 40 to 60.

The Masking slider is important. Hold Alt while dragging it and you see a black and white preview where only the edges that will be sharpened show in white. Set it high enough that the smooth silver surface is not sharpened, only the edges and details. Sharpening a smooth surface amplifies noise and makes the metal look grainy.

I also apply output sharpening on export, set to Screen, Low. That is enough for web. Do not double-sharpen by cranking both the input and output sharpening.

Step 8: Local Adjustments for Problem Areas

Global adjustments get you 80 percent of the way. The last 20 percent is local. Here are the local adjustments I use most on silver.

  • A radial filter on the jewelry, brightening slightly and pulling highlights, to draw the eye.
  • A brush on any blown-out hotspot, pulling highlights and whites down to recover detail. This works if you shot in RAW and the highlight is only mostly clipped, not fully.
  • A brush on the background, darkening slightly and reducing texture, to clean up dust and distractions without affecting the jewelry.
  • A brush on engraved or textured areas, adding a touch of clarity and texture locally to bring out detail without affecting the smooth silver.

Local adjustments are where the edit starts to feel intentional rather than automatic. Spend time here. This is the difference between a photo that looks edited and a photo that looks right.

Step 9: Photoshop for Cleanup

Right-click the image in Lightroom and choose Edit In Photoshop. I do this for every silver hero shot. Lightroom cannot handle the following cleanup tasks well, and trying to do them in Lightroom makes a mess.

Dust and Lint Removal

No matter how carefully you clean the piece and the set, there will be dust. On silver, every speck of dust shows as a bright dot in the highlights and a dark dot in the shadows. I use the Spot Healing Brush set to Content-Aware on a new layer, and I zoom to 100 percent and methodically remove every visible speck. This is tedious and it takes longer than any other step. A single silver ring can have 30 to 50 dust spots. Do them all. Buyers notice.

Reflection Cleanup

If there is a stray reflection of the camera, a stand, or your hand on the silver, remove it with the Clone Stamp or Patch tool. Sample from a nearby clean area of silver and paint over the reflection. Match the gradient of the metal as closely as you can. A cloned area that does not match the surrounding gradient is obvious and looks fake.

Edge Cleanup

The edges of silver jewelry against a dark background can have a faint bright halo from the lighting. This is usually fine, but if it is distracting, paint a thin dark line along the edge on a new layer set to Multiply blend mode, at low opacity, to tighten the edge. Do not overdo this. You want the edge crisp, not outlined.

Step 10: The Fake Test

Before you export, do this. Open the edited image next to the original RAW file with no edits. Toggle between them. The edited image should look like the same photo, just cleaner and more polished. It should not look like a different photo. If the edited version is dramatically brighter, more contrasty, more saturated, or sharper than the original, you have gone too far.

The second test is to compare the silver in the photo to a real piece of silver in your hand, under good light. They should match. If the photo silver is whiter, brighter, or bluer than the real silver, adjust. The customer is going to compare the photo to the real thing when it arrives in the mail. If they do not match, you get a return and a bad review.

Export Settings for Web

  • Format: JPEG
  • Color space: sRGB. Not Adobe RGB. Adobe RGB looks dull on most web browsers because they assume sRGB.
  • Quality: 75 to 80 for web. Higher than 85 is wasted file size on most screens.
  • Resize: 2000 to 2500 pixels on the long edge for product pages. 1080 pixels for Instagram.
  • Output sharpening: Screen, Low.
  • Strip metadata if you want smaller files, but I keep copyright info.

What Makes Silver Look Fake

Here is a quick list of the edits that scream fake on silver. If you see any of these in your work, pull back.

  • Silver that is pure white with no gradient. Real silver has dark areas. If your silver is all highlight, you overexposed or over-edited.
  • Crunchy, gritty texture on smooth silver. Too much clarity or texture.
  • Halos around the edges of the jewelry against the background. Too much sharpening or clarity.
  • Blue or cold tint to the silver. White balance is off, or the vibrance was pushed.
  • Perfectly uniform reflections with no detail. Likely over-smoothed or cloned too aggressively.
  • Shadows lifted so high the metal looks flat. Silver needs shadows for shape.
  • Background darkened so much it looks like the jewelry was cut out and pasted on. The lighting no longer matches.

The Edit Should Disappear

The mark of a good silver jewelry edit is that you cannot tell it was edited. The photo should look like a clean, well-lit photograph of a real piece of silver. No tricks. No filters. No obvious retouching. The metal should look like metal, with the same gradients and reflections it has in real life, just slightly cleaned up and presented clearly.

If you are not sure whether you have gone too far, you have. Pull everything back by 20 percent and look again. Silver rewards restraint. The best edits are the ones where the photographer did less, not more.
