Engraving Silver with Coordinates: Precision, Format, and Placement
Coordinate engraving is one of those requests that sounds simple until you start working through the details. A customer says “I want these coordinates on a pendant” and hands me a pair of numbers. Forty-five minutes later, we’re still discussing format, precision, separators, and whether the minus sign is going to read at 2mm. The numbers themselves are easy. Everything around them is where the design decisions live.
Why Coordinates on Silver
Coordinates encode a place without naming it. That’s the appeal. “40.7128, -74.0060” means nothing to most people who see it, but it means everything to the person who chose it. It’s where you met your spouse. Where your child was born. Where you scattered your father’s ashes. The privacy is built into the format.
Unlike a city name or a street address, coordinates are precise to the spot. “New York” is a place. “40.7128, -74.0060” is a specific corner in Lower Manhattan. For people who want to mark not just a city but the exact bench in the park where the proposal happened, coordinates are the only text that works.
Choosing a Coordinate Format
There are three common formats for expressing geographic coordinates, and each one has implications for engraving.
Decimal Degrees
Format: 40.7128, -74.0060
This is the format I recommend for most engraving. It’s compact, clean, and unambiguous. The numbers are easy to cut in any font, and the decimal points and minus signs are simple characters that reproduce well at small sizes. A full coordinate pair in decimal degrees fits comfortably on a 15mm pendant at 2.5mm letter height.
Four decimal places gives you precision to about 11 meters, which is more than enough for any personal landmark. Five decimal places gets you to about 1 meter, which is overkill for jewelry but some people want it. Three decimal places is about 111 meters, which is imprecise enough that you might be marking the wrong building. Stick with four.
Degrees, Minutes, Seconds
Format: 40 deg 42′ 46″ N, 74 deg 0′ 22″ W
This is the traditional nautical format and it looks beautiful on silver. The degree symbol, the prime marks for minutes, the double-prime for seconds. It has a vintage, cartographic quality that decimal degrees lack. For pieces with a classic aesthetic, this format is the right choice.
The problem is length. A full DMS coordinate pair is roughly twice as many characters as decimal degrees. On a 15mm pendant, it’s too much text at a legible size. You need at least a 20mm pendant to fit DMS at 2mm letter height, and even then it’s tight. The degree symbol and prime marks also add complexity. At 2mm, the degree symbol is a tiny circle that can look like a speck of dust. The prime and double-prime marks are small slashes that can look like scratches.
If you want the DMS look, I recommend going with a larger pendant, 25mm or more, and using 2.5mm letter height. The extra space lets the symbols read clearly. Alternatively, I can simplify the format to degrees and minutes only, dropping the seconds. That cuts the length by about a third while keeping the traditional feel.
Degrees and Decimal Minutes
Format: 40 deg 42.77′ N, 74 deg 0.37′ W
A compromise format. Shorter than DMS, more traditional than decimal degrees. It keeps the degree symbol and the directional letter (N/S/E/W), which gives it a navigational feel. The decimal minutes provide precision to about 1.8 meters. This format fits on a 20mm pendant at 2.5mm letter height.
The Precision Question
Customers often ask how precise the coordinates need to be. The answer depends on what you’re marking.
If you’re marking a city, three decimal places in decimal degrees is sufficient. That gets you within a city block. If you’re marking a building, four decimal places. If you’re marking a specific spot, like a bench or a bed in a hospital, five decimal places gets you to about 1 meter.
But here’s the thing about precision on silver. More decimal places means more characters, which means smaller lettering, which means less legible. Five decimal places in decimal degrees is 12 characters per coordinate, 24 total. On a 15mm pendant, that’s a lot of text. I can fit it, but at 1.5mm letter height, which is at the edge of legibility.
My recommendation for most pieces is four decimal places. It’s precise to 11 meters, which is enough to identify a specific location like a building or a landmark. And it’s short enough to engrave legibly on standard pendant sizes.
Placement and Layout Options
Where the coordinates go on the piece affects both aesthetics and legibility. Here are the layouts I use most often.
Centered on the Pendant Face
The most common placement. Both coordinates stacked vertically, latitude on top, longitude below, centered on the pendant face. Clean, symmetrical, readable. Works on round, oval, and rectangular pendants. This is my default layout unless the customer wants something different.
Along the Edge of a Round Pendant
The coordinates run around the circumference of a round pendant, following the curve. This is visually striking but has legibility challenges. The curved baseline means the letters are tilted relative to the viewer, and the text has to be small to fit the circumference. I use this layout on pendants 20mm or larger, with 2mm lettering. Below 20mm, the curve is too tight and the text becomes hard to read.
Split Front and Back
Latitude on the front, longitude on the back. This allows larger lettering since each side only carries half the text. It’s a good option for small pendants where both coordinates won’t fit legibly on one side. The downside is that you can’t read the full location without flipping the piece.
Coordinates with a Map or Symbol
Adding a visual element alongside the coordinates gives context. A simplified outline of the country or state, a compass rose, a small heart marking the location. The visual goes on one part of the pendant, the coordinates on another. This is the most design-forward option and produces the most interesting pieces, but it requires a larger pendant to accommodate both elements.
Fonts for Coordinate Engraving
Coordinates are numbers, and numbers are forgiving for engraving. Almost any font works because digits have simple, open forms. My recommendations are straightforward.
Gothic monoline is my default for coordinates. The consistent stroke weight means every digit cuts the same way, and the open forms read well at small sizes. At 2.5mm, Gothic monoline coordinates are clean and modern.
Roman serif gives coordinates a more formal, traditional look. The serifs add visual weight that can help legibility, but they also add width. Roman coordinates take up more space than Gothic at the same letter height.
For DMS format, I prefer a serif font because the degree symbol and prime marks look more natural with serifs. The serif degree symbol is a small circle with serifs at the cardinal points, which reads as intentional rather than as a random dot.
The Separator Question
Between latitude and longitude, you need a separator. Comma, semicolon, slash, dot, or a symbol. The choice is minor but affects the overall look.
A comma is the standard and most readable. “40.7128, -74.0060.” The comma is a simple mark that cuts cleanly and reads as a separator. I use this by default.
A slash is more decorative. “40.7128 / -74.0060.” The slash adds a visual element that some people prefer. It cuts cleanly at any size.
A small symbol, like a diamond or a dot, can replace the comma for a more designed look. I cut a 1mm diamond between the coordinates as a separator on pieces where the customer wants something distinctive. It’s a tiny detail that makes the piece feel custom rather than generated.
Verifying Your Coordinates
Before I engrave coordinates, I verify them. I enter the numbers into a mapping service and confirm that the location is what the customer thinks it is. This step catches errors that would otherwise be permanent.
The most common error is a missing minus sign. Latitude ranges from -90 to 90, longitude from -180 to 180. The minus sign indicates south or west. If you drop the minus on a west longitude, you end up on the opposite side of the planet. I’ve caught this error multiple times before engraving. A pendant with coordinates pointing to the Indian Ocean instead of California would be a costly mistake.
I also check for transposed digits. If the customer meant 40.7128 but wrote 40.7218, the location is off by about a kilometer. Not catastrophic, but not right. I send the customer a screenshot of the mapped location before cutting, so they can confirm it’s the right spot.
Depth and Durability for Coordinate Engraving
Coordinates are usually laser or machine engraved. For laser, I cut at 0.1mm to 0.15mm and apply oxidation for contrast. For machine, I cut at 0.2mm. Both depths are adequate for pendant pieces that see moderate wear.
If the coordinates are going on a ring or a piece that will see daily wear, I push for 0.3mm hand engraving if the customer is willing. Hand-engraved coordinates at 0.3mm will last decades. Laser coordinates at 0.1mm on a ring will fade in a couple of years.
For most coordinate pendants, which are worn occasionally rather than daily, laser or machine depth is fine. The oxidation provides the contrast, and the pendant’s protected position on the chest means less wear than a ring or bracelet.
What to Send Your Engraver
If you want coordinate engraving, send me four things. The coordinates in your preferred format, verified on a map. The pendant size and shape you’re considering. The font style you want, or a request for my recommendation. And the story behind the location, if you’re willing to share it.
That last one isn’t necessary, but it helps. If I know the coordinates mark the place where someone’s mother died, I approach the layout and finishing differently than if it marks a favorite vacation spot. The emotional weight of the piece affects how I handle it, and I’d rather know than guess.
Coordinate engraving is simple in concept and nuanced in execution. The numbers are easy. The format, precision, layout, and verification are where the work is. Get those right, and you’ll have a piece that carries a precise, private, permanent record of a place that matters. Get them wrong, and you’ll have a pendant with numbers that point to the wrong city on the wrong continent. Take the time to verify. The permanence of silver is the whole point, and permanent mistakes are the worst kind.
