Engraving Silver Jewelry in Multiple Languages: What Actually Works

I work in a city where people speak dozens of languages, and my engraving bench reflects that. On any given week I might cut English, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Hebrew, Korean, Hindi, and Cyrillic text, sometimes on the same piece. Multilingual engraving is one of the most rewarding parts of my job, but it’s also where I see the most misunderstandings between customers and engravers.

The questions I get asked about multilingual engraving tend to be the same ones over and over. So I’m going to answer them directly, the way I answer them at the bench. No dancing around the limitations. If a script doesn’t work well on silver, I’ll tell you. If it does, I’ll tell you why.

Can you engrave any language on silver?

Technically, yes. Practically, it depends on the script and the method. Every writing system in the world can be reproduced on metal if you’re using the right tool. But the legibility, the durability, and the aesthetic quality vary enormously depending on how the script is structured.

The key variable is stroke complexity. Scripts with simple, geometric strokes cut cleanly on silver. Scripts with complex, flowing strokes or dense characters are harder. The method matters too. Laser engraving can reproduce any script because it’s essentially printing with light. Hand and machine engraving are limited by what a cutting tool can do.

How does laser engraving handle different scripts?

Laser engraving is the universal solution for multilingual work. The laser reads a bitmap or vector file and reproduces it pixel by pixel. It doesn’t care whether the characters are Latin, Arabic, Kanji, or hieroglyphics. If it’s in the file, it’s on the metal.

This means that for any script, in any language, laser engraving is an option. The limitation is depth. As I’ve discussed elsewhere, laser engraving on silver is shallow, typically 0.08mm to 0.15mm. For complex scripts with fine detail, the shallowness is actually helpful because it prevents the fine strokes from merging. But it means the engraving won’t be as durable as a deep hand cut.

If you want multilingual text and durability is a priority, the solution is laser engraving with oxidation. The patina fills the shallow cuts and provides contrast that lasts longer than the physical depth alone.

What about hand engraving in non-Latin scripts?

Hand engraving in non-Latin scripts is possible but requires an engraver who knows the script. I can hand-engrave Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek alphabets because I know the letterforms and can cut them with proper proportions. I cannot hand-engrave Arabic calligraphy because I don’t have the training to reproduce the letterforms correctly. An Arabic calligrapher could, and there are engravers who specialize in this.

The issue is that hand engraving isn’t just copying a shape. It’s understanding the stroke order, the proportional relationships, the weight distribution of each character. A hand engraver who doesn’t know the script will produce something that looks wrong to a native reader, even if the shapes are technically accurate. It’s like someone copying Chinese characters stroke by stroke without understanding calligraphy. The result is recognizable but lifeless.

For scripts I don’t know, I use machine or laser engraving. The machine follows the digital file exactly, so it reproduces the characters faithfully without requiring me to understand the calligraphy. This is the honest approach. Don’t pretend to hand-engrave a script you can’t write.

Which scripts engrave well on silver?

Latin Alphabet (English, Spanish, French, German, etc.)

The easiest and most common. All three methods work. All font types work at appropriate sizes. No special considerations beyond the standard legibility rules.

Cyrillic (Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, etc.)

Cyrillic works almost identically to Latin. The letterforms are geometric, with clear strokes and counters. The only issue is that some Cyrillic letters have small diacritical marks that can be tricky at small sizes. Below 2mm, marks like the breve over short vowels can look like scratches. I recommend 2.5mm minimum for Cyrillic text.

Arabic

Arabic is challenging on silver. The script is cursive by nature, with letters connecting fluidly. The connecting strokes are thin, which causes the same legibility problems as connected cursive in Latin. The letters also change form depending on their position in the word, which means the engraving has to be laid out carefully to ensure correct forms.

Laser engraving is the best method for Arabic because it reproduces the fine strokes and connections accurately. Hand engraving Arabic requires a specialist. Machine engraving works but the connecting strokes can look mechanical and lose the calligraphic quality that makes Arabic beautiful.

Size is critical. Arabic at 2mm is barely legible because the connecting strokes merge. I recommend 3mm minimum for Arabic text, 4mm if the calligraphic quality matters. This means Arabic needs more space than Latin, which affects pendant and ring design choices.

Chinese and Japanese (Kanji/Hanzi)

Chinese characters and Japanese kanji are complex, with many strokes packed into a small space. A single character might have 15 to 20 strokes in a 5mm square. On silver, this density is both an advantage and a problem.

The advantage is that each character is a self-contained unit. Unlike connected cursive, characters don’t rely on connecting strokes for meaning. Each one stands alone. This means you can engrave a single character at 4mm and it’s immediately recognizable.

The problem is stroke density. At 4mm, the individual strokes within a character are 0.2mm to 0.3mm wide, spaced 0.2mm apart. On silver, this is at the limit of what’s resolvable. The strokes can merge, especially with oxidation, which fills the narrow gaps between strokes and turns the character into a blob.

Laser engraving handles Chinese and Japanese well because it can reproduce the fine strokes at 0.05mm resolution. Without oxidation, the characters read clearly. With oxidation, I have to be careful not to over-apply the patina, or it floods the narrow gaps and obscures the detail.

Hand engraving Chinese characters is a specialized art form. I don’t do it. There are engravers in China and Japan who have trained for years in seal carving and character engraving. If you want hand-cut Chinese characters, find a specialist. Machine engraving works but loses the brush-stroke quality that gives characters their life.

Korean (Hangul)

Hangul is one of the most engraving-friendly non-Latin scripts. It’s composed of simple geometric shapes, circles, lines, and angles, arranged in syllable blocks. The strokes are uniform in weight, similar to a monoline Latin font. This means it cuts cleanly by any method and reads well at small sizes.

I can hand-engrave Hangul at 2.5mm with good results because the strokes are straightforward. Machine and laser engraving also work well. Hangul is probably the easiest non-Latin script to work with on silver.

Hebrew

Hebrew is a block script with geometric letterforms. It engraves well at 2.5mm and above. The letters are distinct and don’t connect, which helps legibility. The main concern is the small details on certain letters that distinguish them from each other, like the difference between a bet and a kaf. Below 2mm, these distinctions can blur. Laser or machine engraving is recommended for Hebrew below 3mm.

Devanagari (Hindi, Sanskrit, Nepali)

Devanagari has a horizontal connecting line called a shirekha that runs across the top of each word. This line is a continuous stroke that, on silver, can look like a scratch rather than a structural element. The individual characters below the line are complex, with curves and loops that require careful cutting.

Laser engraving is the best method for Devanagari. The shirekha reproduces cleanly, and the character detail is preserved. At 3mm and above, Devanagari reads well. Below 3mm, the character loops close up and legibility drops sharply.

Can you engrave right-to-left languages correctly?

Yes, but it requires correct file setup. Arabic and Hebrew read right to left. When I set up the engraving file, the text must be laid out in the correct reading direction. Most design software handles this automatically if the text is entered as live text rather than as converted outlines. The issue arises when customers send me a file where the text has been outlined or flattened, and the letter order has been reversed during the conversion.

I always ask customers sending right-to-left text to also send a screenshot of the text as it should appear, so I can verify the layout. If the text looks correct on screen but reversed on the pendant, that’s a setup error, not an engraving error. I catch these before cutting, but I need the reference to check against.

How do you handle mixing languages on one piece?

Mixed-language engraving is increasingly common. A name in English on the front, a phrase in Arabic on the back. A date in Western numerals with the month name in Spanish. A pendant with a Chinese character on one side and the English translation on the other.

The main consideration is visual balance. Different scripts have different visual weights. Chinese characters are dense and dark. Arabic is flowing and light. Latin text is somewhere in between. If you put a Chinese character on one side of a pendant and an English word on the other, the Chinese side will look heavier. This isn’t bad, but it needs to be a deliberate design choice, not an accident.

Font sizing should be adjusted so that the visual weight of each language is balanced, not the physical height. A 4mm Chinese character and a 3mm English word might look balanced, even though they’re different sizes, because the character is denser. I work with customers to find the right balance for mixed-language pieces.

What about Unicode and special characters?

Unicode is the encoding standard that lets computers represent text in any script. For laser and machine engraving, I work with Unicode text files. As long as the font file supports the Unicode range for the script, the text renders correctly and the machine or laser reproduces it.

The issue is font availability. Not all fonts support all scripts. If a customer sends me text in a script that my default fonts don’t support, I need to find a font that does. For common scripts like Cyrillic, Greek, and Hebrew, I have fonts ready. For less common scripts, I may need to source a font, which adds time to the job.

Special characters like emoji, which are also in Unicode, can be laser-engraved but usually look terrible at small sizes. An emoji face at 3mm is a blob of pixels. I don’t recommend them.

How small can you engrave non-Latin text?

It depends on the script. Here are my minimum sizes for legible engraving on silver, based on years of testing.

These are my standards. Other engravers may have different comfort levels. But if someone tells you they can legibly engrave Arabic at 1.5mm on a ring, I’d want to see a sample before believing it.

What should I send if I want multilingual engraving?

Send three things. The text in its original script, typed as text (not as an image). A translation so I understand what I’m engraving. And a screenshot or reference image showing how the text should look when laid out.

If you’re sending right-to-left text, explicitly tell me it’s right-to-left. If you’re sending a script with multiple acceptable forms (simplified vs. traditional Chinese, for example), tell me which one you want. If the text includes diacritical marks that are essential for meaning (like vowel points in Hebrew), make sure they’re in the file and tell me they matter.

The more context you give me, the better the result. A customer who sends “engrave this” with a text string is asking me to guess. A customer who sends “this is my grandmother’s name in Arabic, it means ‘my light,’ please engrave it at 4mm on a 20mm pendant” is giving me everything I need to do the job right.

Will the engraving be readable to a native speaker?

If done correctly, yes. Laser-engraved text in any script is as readable as printed text at the same size. Machine-engraved text is equally readable. Hand-engraved text depends on the engraver’s familiarity with the script.

The one thing I always warn customers about is oxidation. For scripts with dense characters, like Chinese or Arabic, oxidation can fill the narrow spaces between strokes and reduce legibility. I usually recommend skipping oxidation for these scripts and relying on the shadow from the cut for contrast. If oxidation is needed, I apply it very lightly and clean the surface thoroughly so only the deepest cuts retain the patina.

Multilingual engraving on silver is absolutely doable and produces some of the most meaningful pieces I make. The key is matching the method to the script, the size to the complexity, and the engraver to the task. Do those three things, and the result will be a piece that speaks in whatever language you need it to.
