I’ve spent years handling old silver—turning over a coin in a museum case, reading the worn stamp inside a ring, tracing the file marks on the back of a brooch nobody thought to photograph. Sterling silver has a 900-year head start on most of the “materials” we treat as modern, and the closer you look, the stranger the story gets. This is the history of sterling silver jewelry, from the silver mines of ancient Athens to the 925-stamped pendants you see in any jewelry store today.
The story isn’t neat. It runs through war, counterfeiting, royal debt, and a quiet metallurgical decision made in 12th-century England that still defines what “sterling” means on your necklace clasp.
Silver Before Sterling: The Metal That Built Empires
Long before anyone agreed on a 92.5% standard, silver was already the most political metal on earth. The Athenians mined it at Laurion, southeast of the city, starting around 600 BC. Those silver veins paid for the fleet that beat the Persians at Salamis in 480 BC. Without Laurion, there’s a real argument that Athens doesn’t become Athens.
The Romans took silver seriously enough to mine it on an industrial scale. At Rio Tinto in Hispania (modern Spain) and especially at Las Médulas in northwest Spain, they used a technique called ruina montium—literally “wrecking the mountains.” They’d carve aqueducts into rock, flood the chambers with water, then release it all at once to collapse entire hillsides. Pliny the Elder, writing in the 1st century AD, called the results more terrifying than anything done by human conquest. The slag heaps at Rio Tinto are still being reprocessed today because the Romans left so much metal behind.
None of this was “sterling.” The silver was too pure or too impure, depending on the mine, and nobody had agreed on a universal alloy. What the Romans did establish was the habit of stamping silver with a maker’s mark and an authority’s mark. That habit is the ancestor of every hallmark you see today.
Where “Sterling” Actually Comes From
Here’s where the history gets fuzzy, and I want to be honest about that. The word “sterling” has at least three competing origin stories, and historians still argue about which one is right.
The most commonly told story points to the Easterlings—merchants from the Hanseatic League, the German trading cities of the Baltic, who came to England in the 12th century. Their silver coins were notably consistent in purity, and English people started calling good silver “Easterling silver,” which got shortened to “sterling.” This is the version you’ll read in most jewelry blogs, and it’s plausible, but the documentary evidence is thinner than people like to admit.
A second theory ties the word to the Old English steorra (“star”), because some early Norman silver pennies were stamped with a small star. A third connects it to the Old French esterlin, a term for a small coin. The Oxford English Dictionary hedges and lists multiple possibilities.
What’s certain is this: by the late 1100s, under Henry II, England had standardized the silver penny at 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. That number—92.5—is the whole ballgame. Every piece of sterling silver you own, from a $30 ring to a museum-grade tea service, is built on a royal decision from roughly 1158.
Why 92.5% and not pure? Pure silver—called fine silver, 99.9%—is too soft. It scratches if you look at it sideways. It won’t hold a crisp edge on a coin or survive being carried in a pocket. Copper, added at 7.5%, gives it enough hardness to hold a shape and take a polish without turning the metal into something that tarnishes copper-fast. Someone, at some point in 12th-century England, tested enough ratios to land on 92.5 as the sweet spot. We’ve never improved on it.
The First Hallmarks: 1300 and the Goldsmiths’ Company
If you want to understand why sterling silver has a reputation for being trustworthy, you have to look at medieval fraud. In the late 1200s, English silver coins were being clipped—shaved around the edges by people who’d melt down the clippings and sell them. Counterfeiters were debasing the coinage. Edward I, in 1300, responded by ordering that all silver objects sold in England be tested and stamped at the Goldsmiths’ Hall in London. That’s the literal origin of the word “hallmark”—a mark applied at the hall.
The early hallmark was a leopard’s head, the royal symbol. If you brought a silver cup to market without that stamp, it could be seized and you could be fined. The system wasn’t perfect. People forged marks. Assayers took bribes. But the principle stuck: silver had to be tested by an independent authority, not just claimed by the maker.
The Five Marks of a Full English Hallmark
By the 14th and 15th centuries, the hallmarking system had grown into a stack of punches that told you nearly everything about a piece. A full English hallmark on a piece of antique silver typically includes:
- The maker’s mark—the silversmith’s initials or symbol.
- The standard mark—a lion passant (a walking lion) confirming 92.5% purity.
- The assay office mark—a symbol for the city where it was tested (a leopard’s head for London, an anchor for Birmingham, a crown for Sheffield, a castle for Edinburgh, a tree for Chester).
- The date letter—a single letter, cycling through the alphabet, that corresponds to a specific year. Each assay office has its own cycle, and the shape of the punch itself changes.
- The duty mark—a sovereign’s head stamped on pieces made during the years a tax on silver was in force (1784–1890).
That’s a lot of information packed into a stamp the size of a thumbprint. It’s why collectors of English silver can date a spoon to the exact year. American silver, by contrast, mostly doesn’t have this system, which is one reason American antique silver is harder to authenticate.
The Silver Jewelry Timeline: A Quick Reference
Before I get into the jewelry-specific history, here’s a timeline you can keep in your head. Silver as currency predates silver as personal adornment in the West by centuries, and the gap matters.

Silver Jewelry in the Ancient and Medieval World
Silver jewelry existed long before “sterling” was a word, but it was a different kind of object. In ancient Egypt, silver was actually rarer than gold for centuries—the Egyptians had no native silver mines and had to import it. A silver ring from the Middle Kingdom (around 2000 BC) was worth more than a gold one.
The Greeks and Romans wore silver, but silver jewelry was largely for people who couldn’t afford gold. Roman silver rings, fibulae (the safety pins of the ancient world), and bracelets survive in huge numbers, and they’re usually simple—twisted wire, stamped bezels, the occasional engraved intaglio. If you wanted to show off, you wore gold.
Medieval Europe kept that hierarchy. Silver was for spoons, cups, and belt mounts. Silver jewelry existed—rings especially, since a signet ring had a practical use—but gold was the jewelry metal of the aristocracy. Silver’s big advantage was that it was honest currency. You could melt a silver ring down and spend it. You can’t do that with most gem-set gold jewelry.
How Silver Jewelry Got Cheap: The Birmingham Revolution
The real turning point for silver jewelry—as opposed to silver tableware—came in the 18th and 19th centuries, and it came from Birmingham, England. Birmingham wasn’t a guild city like London. It was a free-for-all manufacturing town, and by the 1760s it was producing buttons, buckles, and small silver goods at a scale London silversmiths couldn’t match.
The Birmingham Assay Office opened in 1773, after a lobbying fight that’s worth a book of its own. (The story goes that the Birmingham delegation and the Sheffield delegation both traveled to London to petition Parliament and ended up staying at the same inn, arguing all night.) Birmingham’s anchor mark and Sheffield’s crown mark are both the result of that 1773 compromise.
Two technologies changed silver jewelry specifically:
- Sheffield plate (1740s): Thomas Boulsover discovered that you could fuse a sheet of silver to a sheet of copper and work them as one. This let manufacturers produce silver-looking goods at a fraction of the cost. Sheffield plate isn’t sterling, but it trained a generation of workers to make thin, delicate silver forms.
- Electroplating (1840s): The Elkington brothers patented electroplating in 1840. You could now deposit a thin layer of silver onto any conductive base metal. The price of “silver-looking” jewelry collapsed overnight, and the market for genuine solid silver split off as a premium tier.
By the 1860s, a working-class woman in Manchester could afford a silver brooch. That had never been true before. The Victorian middle class became the first mass market for silver jewelry, and Birmingham fed it.
American Silversmithing and the Long Argument About Standards
America had its own silver story, and it’s messier. Colonial silversmiths—Paul Revere in Boston, Myer Myers in New York, Jeremiah Dummer—made silver goods to order, mostly for the wealthy. There was no hallmarking system. A smith stamped his own mark and you took his word for the purity.
After independence, American silver grew into a real industry, but the lack of a legal standard caused problems. In the 1840s and 1850s, some American “coin silver” was actually only 90% pure—made from melted silver coins. (The U.S. silver dollar was 90% silver, 10% copper.) Other makers used 92.5%. Buyers had no way to tell without testing.
The U.S. Congress finally settled it with the National Stamping Act of 1906. The law said that any item sold as “sterling” had to be at least 92.5% silver, and that the word “sterling” or the number “925” had to be stamped on the piece. There have been amendments since—most notably in 1961 and the 1970s—but the core rule is still 92.5%.
If you’ve ever wondered why every piece of sterling jewelry has that little “925” somewhere on it, it’s because of a law passed in 1906 to stop a problem that started in the 1840s. Regulation moves slowly.
The Arts and Crafts Movement: Silver Gets Handmade Again
By the 1880s, Birmingham-style mass production had saturated the market with cheap stamped silver. The reaction came from the Arts and Crafts movement in England—William Morris, C.R. Ashbee, and a wave of silversmiths who wanted to go back to handwork.
The Guild of Handicraft, founded by Ashbee in 1888 in London’s East End (and later moved to Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds), is the most famous example. Guild silver has visible hammer marks. The wires are slightly irregular. The pieces cost more than Birmingham’s stamped output and they were proud of that.
What the Arts and Crafts silversmiths understood, and what a lot of modern silver jewelry borrows from, is that imperfection reads as authenticity. A perfectly machine-stamped brooch could have been made by anyone. A slightly uneven hammered one was made by a specific pair of hands.
Art Deco, Taxco, and the 20th-Century Silver Boom
The 1920s and 1930s were arguably the most creative period in silver jewelry history. Three things happened at once.
First, Art Deco. The 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris set a geometric, machine-age aesthetic that silver was perfect for. French jewelers like Jean Després and Jean Fouquet made silver jewelry that looked like it had been machined in an airplane factory—which, in Després’s case, wasn’t far off, since he’d worked in aviation during World War I.
Second, Mexico. In 1929, an American named William Spratling moved to Taxco, a nearly exhausted colonial silver-mining town in Guerrero, and started a workshop. Spratling hired local craftsmen, taught them modern design, and within ten years Taxco was the silver jewelry capital of the Americas. I’ll cover this in detail in a separate piece, but the short version: Spratling didn’t invent Mexican silver, but he gave it a 20th-century identity.
Third, Scandinavia. Georg Jensen, the Danish firm founded in Copenhagen in 1904, had by the 1930s turned silver into the defining material of Nordic design. Jensen’s acorn-and-grape Art Nouveau pieces evolved into the clean, organic modernism of designers like Henning Koppel. The idea that silver jewelry could be minimalist—that ornament wasn’t the point—came out of this period.
The “925” Stamp Goes Global
Here’s a small thing that took a long time to happen: the international adoption of “925” as a stamp. England had been hallmarking for centuries, but the U.S. only legally required the sterling standard in 1906, and other countries had their own systems. Germany used “800” (80% silver) and “835” for a lot of its silver. Italy used “800” and “925.” Mexico used “925,” “980,” and “950” at different periods.
The push toward a single global standard came slowly, driven partly by the International Convention on Hallmarking (the Hallmarking Convention, signed in Vienna in 1972). The convention established a set of common marks that member countries would recognize. The “925” stamp, inside a scale or a simple oval, became the most widely accepted.
Today, if you pick up a piece of silver jewelry anywhere in the world and it says “925,” you can be reasonably confident it’s sterling. Not certain—counterfeit stamps exist, especially on cheap online-marketplace jewelry—but reasonably confident. The fact that a 900-year-old English coinage standard is now the default on a pendant made in Bangkok or Jaipur is a strange bit of globalization.
How to Read an Old Silver Stamp Yourself
If you’re going to buy antique silver jewelry, learn to read the stamps. It’s the single most useful skill you can develop, and it’s free. A loupe with 10x magnification costs about $10 and pays for itself on the first piece.
Here’s what I look for, roughly in order:
- 925, Sterling, or Ster: Modern. Pretty safe bet, but verify with a magnet test (silver isn’t magnetic) and a weight test (genuine silver is heavier than it looks for its size).
- 925 inside a square or oval: Common on Italian, Mexican, and Thai sterling. The shape often indicates the country.
- A lion passant: English sterling, pre-1999. After 1999 the UK simplified its hallmarking and the lion became optional, but older pieces should have it.
- 925 + a city mark + a date letter: Full English hallmark. This is the gold standard for collectors. You can date it to the year.
- 800 or 835: Continental silver, usually German or Italian. It’s real silver, just a lower purity. It’s not “sterling” and shouldn’t be sold as such.
- “Mexico Silver” or “Taxco” + a number: Mexican silver. Older pieces may be 980 or 950. Post-1979 pieces should be 925.
- “Coin” or “Pure Coin”: American coin silver, ~90%. Antique, often 19th century.
- EPNS, EPBM, or “A1”: Electroplated. Not solid silver. Don’t pay silver prices for it.
The one I see people get fooled by most often is “silver tone.” That phrase means nothing. It could be polished steel. Walk away.
Famous Silver Pieces That Shaped the Tradition
If you want to see where silver’s reputation comes from, you have to look at specific objects. The history of sterling is partly a history of remarkable pieces that set the standard for what the metal could do. A handful of them are worth knowing because they show up in the design vocabulary of modern silver, even when the connection isn’t obvious.
The Warren Cup (1st century AD, Roman)
The Warren Cup, now in the British Museum, is a Roman silver drinking cup from the 1st century AD. It’s a technical masterpiece—the figures are raised in high relief from a single sheet of silver, and the chasing is so fine that you can read the drapery folds. The cup also happens to depict scenes that kept it locked in private collections for most of its history, which is why most people haven’t seen it. The technical point stands: Roman silversmiths were capable of work that 19th-century European smiths struggled to match. The “Etruscan revival” of the 1860s was partly an admission that the ancients had been ahead of the moderns.
The Royal Gold Cup (14th century, French/English)
The Royal Gold Cup, also in the British Museum, was made in France around 1380 and is technically gold with enamel, but it set the standard for royal metalwork that influenced silver for centuries. The cup shows how medieval smiths thought about luxury objects—the form, the enamel work, the narrative scenes around the body. Silver copies and adaptations of this kind of cup dominated European court silver through the 1500s.
The Syon Cope and Ecclesiastical Silver
Religious institutions were the biggest commissioners of silver through the medieval period, and the surviving ecclesiastical silver—chalices, monstrances, reliquaries—is where you see the craft pushed to its limits. The medieval chalice form, with its wide bowl and knopped stem, is still the basis for modern liturgical silver. If you ever handle a really old chalice in a European church, you’re handling a direct descendant of the objects that trained generations of smiths. The Reformation destroyed most of the English ecclesiastical silver—Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries (1536–1541) sent most of it to the melting pot—but the form survived in the silver made for the new Anglican communion.
The Portland Vase Reproductions (18th–19th century)
The Portland Vase, a Roman cameo glass vessel in the British Museum, became a design obsession in the late 1700s. Josiah Wedgwood produced thousands of jasperware copies. Less well known: dozens of silversmiths produced silver reproductions and adaptations. The vase form—a narrow neck, swelling body, two handles—became a standard silver vase shape through the 19th century. If you see a Victorian silver vase with that silhouette, you’re looking at a descendant of a Roman glass object.
The Georg Jensen Acorn Pattern (1916)
Jumping to the 20th century: Georg Jensen’s “Acorn” flatware pattern, designed by Johan Rohde in 1916, is one of the most influential pieces of silver design ever made. It’s still in production, and it set the template for organic modernist silver that every Scandinavian house copied for the next 50 years. If you own any silver flatware with a stylized plant motif and a hammered surface, it descends from the Acorn pattern. The pattern is also a useful reference point for dating: if a piece of Danish silver looks Acorn-influenced, it’s post-1916.
Where to Actually See Historic Silver
If you’re serious about silver, you should see the real thing in person. Photographs don’t capture weight, surface, or scale. The collections that matter, roughly by region:
- The British Museum, London: The Warren Cup, the Royal Gold Cup, and one of the world’s best collections of medieval and Renaissance silver.
- The Victoria and Albert Museum, London: The best collection of English silver anywhere. The galleries walk you through 500 years of hallmarking history. The Castellani pieces are here too.
- The Goldsmiths’ Hall, London: The home of the assay office. They have a museum of hallmarking that explains the system better than any book.
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York: Strong American silver (Revere, Myers, Tiffany) and a good European collection.
- The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: The largest collection of Paul Revere silver, including the Sons of Liberty Bowl.
- The Dallas Museum of Art: The Wendy and Emery Reves Collection includes important European silver.
- The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam: The best Dutch silver collection, with pieces from the Dutch Golden Age.
- The Danish Museum of Art & Design, Copenhagen: The center for Georg Jensen and Scandinavian modernist silver.
If you can get to even one of these, go. Handling silver in person—the weight, the tarnish patterns, the way light moves across a hammered surface—changes how you evaluate every piece you see afterward. The internet has made a lot of silver knowledge accessible, but it hasn’t replaced standing in front of the real thing.
Why Sterling Is Still the Default (and Probably Always Will Be)
It’s worth asking why, after 900 years, nobody has replaced sterling. We have titanium, tungsten, surgical steel, platinum, palladium—metals that don’t tarnish, that are harder, that don’t need the copper alloy. Why does a custom 925 sterling silver pendant still feel like the obvious choice?
Part of it is cost. Platinum is six times the price of silver. Palladium spiked wildly during the pandemic. Titanium is light, which some people like and some people hate because it feels cheap even when it isn’t. Sterling sits in a sweet spot: expensive enough to feel like a real material, cheap enough to use generously.
But the bigger answer is that sterling is workable. A silversmith can raise it, chase it, forge it, solder it, and repair it with tools that haven’t changed much in 500 years. You can’t resize a platinum ring at home. You can resize a sterling one with a torch and a steady hand. That reparability—the fact that a 19th-century brooch can be cleaned, re-tipped, and worn again—is part of why silver jewelry accumulates history the way gold doesn’t. Gold gets melted down when gold prices spike. Silver survives.
What I’d Tell Someone Buying Their First Sterling Piece
If you’re buying your first piece of real sterling silver jewelry—whether it’s a simple pendant, a signet ring, or a heavier chain—here’s what I’d actually tell you, based on handling more silver than is probably healthy:
Look for the 925 stamp first. Not as a guarantee, but as a starting point. If it’s not there, the seller needs to explain why. (Tiny antique pieces sometimes aren’t stamped. Modern pieces should be.)
Expect tarnish. Sterling silver tarnishes because of the copper in it—pure silver barely tarnishes at all. A piece that never tarnishes isn’t sterling. Tarnish isn’t damage; it’s the metal telling you it’s alive. A polishing cloth will bring it back in a minute.
Buy for the design, not the metal weight. A well-designed 8-gram pendant will outlast a clumsily made 20-gram one. Weight matters for chains (a flimsy chain will kink), but for pendants, rings, and earrings, design matters more.
Don’t store silver in the bathroom. Humidity accelerates tarnish like nothing else. A ziplock bag with an anti-tarnish strip costs a dollar and will keep a piece looking new for a year.
And finally—understand that you’re wearing a metal with a 900-year-old pedigree. The 925 standard was set by an English king who never imagined pendants or snap-chain bracelets. The hallmarking system that protects you was built to catch counterfeiters in 1300. The 925 stamp on your piece is the end of a very long argument about what “real” silver means. That doesn’t make the jewelry better, but it does make it more interesting, and interesting things tend to get worn more.
