How Deep Should Silver Engraving Be? Durability and Legibility Explained
Someone emails me every couple of weeks asking some version of “how deep do you cut?” They’ve read a product listing that says “deeply engraved” and they want to know if that means something or if it’s marketing fluff. Fair question. The answer is that depth is the single most important technical variable in engraving, and most people, including some jewelers, don’t think about it carefully enough.
I’m going to give you actual numbers in this article. Not ranges so wide they’re meaningless. Real depths, measured in tenths of a millimeter, for specific types of silver jewelry. If you’re commissioning a piece or trying to evaluate one, these numbers will tell you whether the engraving will last or whether it’ll wear smooth in a year.
Why Depth Matters More Than Width
People focus on how wide a letter is cut, but depth is what determines whether an engraving survives. Here’s why. Silver is a soft metal. On the Mohs scale it’s about 2.5 to 3. That means everyday contact, skin oils, soap, cloth, and incidental scraping will slowly remove silver from the surface. A polished silver ring loses roughly 0.01 to 0.02mm of surface material per year of daily wear. That doesn’t sound like much, but it compounds.
If your engraving is cut 0.1mm deep, that’s five to ten years of wear before the deepest part of the cut is flush with the surrounding surface. Except it’s not that simple. The engraving doesn’t wear evenly. The raised edges of the cut, called the burr, flatten first. Then the walls of the cut smooth out. Then the bottom rises as the surface metal is lost. A 0.1mm engraving that’s theoretically good for five years might be illegible in two because the edges round off and the contrast disappears before the metal is fully gone.
Depth buys you time. Width buys you legibility. You need both, but if I had to choose, I’d take a deep narrow cut over a shallow wide one every time. A 0.3mm deep cut at 0.4mm width will outlast a 0.1mm deep cut at 1mm width by a factor of ten.
The Depth Tiers I Work To
I have four depth tiers that I use for different purposes. These aren’t arbitrary. They came from years of cutting at various depths and tracking how the pieces held up.
Surface Mark: 0.05mm to 0.15mm
This is laser territory. The cut is barely tactile. You can feel it with a fingernail if you press hard, but it’s closer to a texture than a groove. At this depth, the engraving relies entirely on contrast, either from oxidation or from the matte finish of the laser-ablated surface against polished silver.
Surface marks are appropriate for pieces that won’t see wear. Display pendants, pieces kept in a box, items engraved for ceremonial rather than daily use. For anything worn on the body, this depth is a ticking clock. I tell customers upfront: at 0.1mm, expect the engraving to fade within 12 to 24 months of regular wear.
The one exception is inside ring engraving at this depth. The inside of a ring is protected by the finger and doesn’t see the same abrasion as an outer surface. A 0.1mm laser mark inside a wedding band can last 10+ years because nothing rubs against it. Context matters.
Standard Cut: 0.15mm to 0.25mm
This is what most machine engraving produces. It’s a real groove, visible and tactile. You can feel it clearly with a fingernail. Under a loupe, the walls and bottom are distinct. Oxidation holds well at this depth because there’s enough recess for the patina to anchor.
For pieces with moderate wear, like a pendant worn occasionally or a ring worn a few times a week, 0.2mm is a reasonable depth. I expect 5 to 8 years of legibility before the engraving needs refreshing. For daily wear pieces, 0.2mm is marginal. I’d push for 0.25mm minimum on a ring that’s going to be worn every day.
Deep Cut: 0.3mm to 0.5mm
This is hand engraving territory, or machine engraving with multiple passes. At 0.3mm, the groove is substantial. It casts its own shadow under direct light, which means it’s legible even without oxidation. At 0.5mm, you can see the depth clearly from the side profile of the piece.
Deep cuts are for heirloom pieces, signet rings, anything meant to last a lifetime or more. A 0.5mm hand-cut letter on a signet ring will be readable in 30 to 50 years of daily wear. The silver will develop a patina and the engraving will still be crisp underneath. This is the depth I cut for pieces people plan to pass down.
The trade-off is that deep cuts take longer and cost more. A 0.5mm hand cut requires multiple passes with the graver, careful burr management, and more finishing time. The cut also needs to be wider to accommodate the depth without undercutting the walls. A 0.5mm deep cut typically needs at least 0.6mm width to maintain structural integrity in the silver. That means fewer characters fit on the piece.
Relief Cut: 0.5mm and Deeper
Below 0.5mm you’re into relief engraving territory, where the background is removed to leave the design raised. This is how seals and signets are cut. The depth here can go to 1mm or more. At this depth, you’re not just cutting lines, you’re sculpting the metal.
Relief cuts are permanent in the sense that they’ll outlast the wearer. A signet cut at 0.8mm depth will be functional as a seal for a century. But they’re also the most expensive and time-consuming. And they require thick silver. You can’t cut 0.8mm deep on a 1mm pendant without punching through. Relief work needs at least 1.5mm of metal thickness, preferably 2mm or more.
The Relationship Between Depth and Surface Thickness
This is the constraint that trips people up. You can’t cut deeper than the metal is thick. That sounds obvious, but customers regularly ask for deep engraving on thin pendants. A typical silver pendant is 1mm to 1.5mm thick. A typical silver ring band is 1.5mm to 2mm thick. A thin chain tag might be 0.5mm thick.
My rule is never cut deeper than 40 percent of the metal thickness. On a 1mm pendant, that’s 0.4mm max. On a 2mm ring, that’s 0.8mm. On a 0.5mm tag, that’s 0.2mm. Go deeper and you risk weakening the piece structurally. The silver around the engraving becomes thin enough to dent or tear under pressure.
For pieces that need deep engraving on thin metal, the solution is to start with thicker stock. I regularly make pendants at 2mm or 2.5mm specifically for customers who want deep engraving. The thicker silver costs more, but it allows the 0.5mm cuts that will last decades. It’s a false economy to save money on metal thickness and then have engraving that wears away in two years.
How Depth Affects Oxidation
Oxidation, or liver of sulfur patina, fills the engraved recess with black silver sulfide. The deeper the cut, the better the oxidation holds. Here’s why. The patina isn’t just sitting on the surface, it’s chemically bonded to the silver. But on a shallow cut, the patina is thin and exposed. On a deep cut, the patina is thick and protected by the walls of the groove.
At 0.1mm depth, oxidation lasts 6 to 12 months of daily wear before it wears thin enough that the contrast drops. At 0.2mm, it lasts 2 to 3 years. At 0.3mm, 5 to 8 years. At 0.5mm, I’ve seen oxidation hold for 15+ years on pieces that are worn regularly. The depth creates a reservoir that protects the patina from abrasion.
If a customer wants oxidation but doesn’t want to maintain it, I push for 0.3mm minimum depth. That’s the threshold where the patina becomes semi-permanent. Below that, plan on re-oxidizing periodically. It’s a simple process, but it requires bringing the piece in or sending it to a jeweler.
Depth and Legibility: The Non-Linear Relationship
Here’s something that surprises people. Depth improves legibility, but not linearly. The jump from 0.1mm to 0.2mm is dramatic. The engraving goes from “barely there” to “clearly visible.” The jump from 0.2mm to 0.3mm is noticeable but less dramatic. The jump from 0.3mm to 0.5mm is subtle in terms of legibility, though significant in terms of durability.
The reason is that legibility is about contrast, and contrast comes from shadow. At 0.1mm, the groove is too shallow to cast a meaningful shadow. The eye reads it through oxidation contrast alone. At 0.2mm, the groove is deep enough to create its own shadow under most lighting, which means the engraving is visible even without oxidation. At 0.3mm and above, the shadow is strong enough that the engraving reads clearly even in bright, flat light where shadows normally disappear.
So if your goal is legibility, 0.2mm is the cliff edge. Below that, you need oxidation to read. Above that, the engraving reads on its own. If your goal is durability, keep going deeper. But for pure readability, 0.2mm is where the curve flattens.
Measuring Engraving Depth: How to Check Your Piece
If you have a piece of engraved silver and want to know how deep the engraving is, you need a depth gauge or a micrometer with a fine point. You can also use the fingernail test, which is less precise but gives you a general sense.
Run your fingernail across the engraving. If you barely feel it, like running your nail across a piece of paper, it’s a surface mark, probably 0.05 to 0.1mm. If your nail catches clearly but the groove feels shallow, like a scratch on a table, it’s a standard cut, 0.15 to 0.25mm. If your nail drops into a definite channel and you can feel the walls on either side, it’s a deep cut, 0.3mm or more. If the groove feels like a canyon and your nail sinks in significantly, it’s relief work.
For precise measurement, a depth micrometer with a needle probe can read to 0.01mm. Place the probe in the groove and zero against the surrounding surface. I check every piece before it leaves my bench. If a customer asks, I can tell them the exact depth to the hundredth of a millimeter.
Silver Alloy and Depth: Why 925 Behaves Differently
The silver I work with most is 925 sterling, which is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. The copper is what gives sterling its hardness relative to fine silver (99.9% pure). That hardness difference matters for engraving depth.
Fine silver is too soft for most jewelry, but it’s a dream to engrave. The graver slides through it like butter, and you can cut very deep, very clean grooves with minimal effort. The problem is that fine silver deforms under wear. A 0.3mm engraving in fine silver might dent or compress if the piece is knocked against a hard surface. The metal is so soft that the engraving walls can bend.
Sterling silver is harder, which means the engraving holds its shape better under impact. But it’s also harder to cut deep. At 0.5mm depth in sterling, the graver meets increased resistance from the work-hardened surface. I have to make multiple passes, each one deepening the cut incrementally, because trying to remove 0.5mm of sterling in a single pass causes the graver to chatter and leave rough walls. Two passes at 0.25mm each produces a cleaner cut than one pass at 0.5mm.
Some silver jewelry uses alloys with additional hardeners, like argentium silver (which contains germanium) or silver with nickel additions. These are even harder than standard sterling and require more aggressive cutting or multiple passes. I test each piece with a light scribe cut before committing to a depth, because the alloy affects how the metal responds to the graver.
Surface Finish and Perceived Depth
Here’s a subtlety that catches people off guard. The perceived depth of an engraving changes depending on the surface finish around it. The same 0.2mm cut looks deeper on a matte finish than on a mirror polish. This isn’t physics, it’s optics.
A mirror-polished surface reflects light directly back to the eye. The engraving, being a recess, reflects light at an angle. The contrast between direct and angled reflection is what makes the engraving visible. But on a mirror finish, the surrounding surface is so bright that it visually floods the shallow engraving, making it appear shallower than it is.
A matte or satin finish diffuses light in all directions. The surrounding surface is less bright, so the engraving’s shadow reads more strongly. A 0.2mm cut on a satin finish looks like a 0.3mm cut on a mirror finish. Same depth, different perception.
This matters for commissioning decisions. If you want a mirror-finished pendant with engraving, you need a deeper cut to achieve the same visual legibility as you’d get on a matte pendant. I typically add 0.05mm to 0.1mm to my standard depths when working on mirror finishes. Alternatively, I can matte-finish just the engraved area while leaving the surrounding surface polished, which gives the best of both worlds.
Maintaining Deep Engraving Over Time
Deep engraving is an investment, and like any investment in silver, it benefits from proper care. The main threat to deep engraving isn’t wear, it’s polish. Silver polish, especially the paste kind, contains abrasives that remove microscopic amounts of silver with each use. Over years of regular polishing, a 0.4mm engraving can be reduced to 0.3mm or less.
I tell customers with deep-engraved pieces to minimize polishing. Tarnish can be removed with a silver dip or a microfiber cloth designed for silver, neither of which removes metal. Reserve paste polish for the flat surfaces around the engraving, and avoid getting it in the grooves. A soft brush can remove polish residue from the cuts without abrading them.
For oxidation maintenance, the same principle applies. Re-oxidizing is non-destructive. It adds black patina to the cuts without removing metal. Polishing to remove old oxidation before re-oxidizing is where the metal loss happens. I recommend chemical removal of old oxidation (a mild silver dip dissolves the patina) rather than mechanical removal (polishing).
What to Ask For When Commissioning Engraving
If you’re commissioning a piece, ask your engraver about depth. Specifically, ask “what depth will you cut to?” If they can’t answer in tenths of a millimeter, that’s a yellow flag. It means they’re either eyeballing it or they don’t think about depth as a variable. Both are problematic for a piece you care about.
For daily wear pieces, ask for at least 0.3mm. For inside ring engraving, 0.2mm is fine because the surface is protected. For display pieces, 0.1mm is acceptable. For heirlooms, push for 0.4mm to 0.5mm and make sure the metal is thick enough to support it.
If the engraver says their machine can’t cut that deep, that’s honest. Most production machines max out around 0.25mm. For deeper work, you need hand engraving or a specialized deep-cutting machine. Don’t accept “it’ll be deep enough” as an answer. Get the number.
The Cost of Depth
Deeper engraving costs more. Not because the metal is more expensive, but because it takes more time. A 0.2mm machine cut takes one pass. A 0.4mm cut takes two or three passes, plus cleaning up the burrs between passes. A 0.5mm hand cut takes 3 to 5 times longer than a 0.2mm hand cut because each pass removes a small amount of metal and the graver needs resharpening more frequently on deep work.
The cost increase is roughly proportional to depth for machine work, and exponential for hand work. Going from 0.2mm to 0.4mm on a machine might double the cost. Going from 0.2mm to 0.5mm by hand might triple or quadruple it. That’s the price of permanence.
My advice is to match the depth to the piece’s purpose and your budget. Don’t pay for 0.5mm on a pendant that lives in a jewelry box. Don’t settle for 0.1mm on a ring you’ll wear daily for decades. The right depth is the one that matches how the piece will be used. Everything else is either overspending or under-engineering.
