Photographing Engraved Silver: How to Capture Detail Without Overexposing
Engraved silver is the subject that broke me as a photographer. I shot my first engraved signet ring three years into my career and I could not get the engraving to read on camera. Either the lines were lost in shadow, or they were blown out to white, or they were there but flat and lifeless like a photocopy. I spent two weekends on it before I got a shot I would actually show a client. Since then I have shot hundreds of engraved pieces for lhcjewelry.com/, from signet rings to engraved pendants to hand-chased cuffs, and I want to save you the two weekends I lost.
This is a deep dive. It assumes you already know the basics of silver jewelry photography. If you do not, go read the glare guide first, because everything here builds on controlling reflections. Engraving adds a second problem on top of the mirror problem: you now have texture and depth to capture, and that texture lives in tiny valleys that are millimeters deep. The light that flatters a smooth silver surface will often flatten engraving into nothing. You have to light for two surfaces at once.
Why Engraving Disappears on Camera
Engraving is relief. There are raised lines and recessed lines. The eye reads the engraving because the raised lines catch light differently than the recessed lines, creating contrast. The problem on camera is that if you light the piece with a big soft light from above, the light hits the top of the raised lines and the bottom of the recessed lines equally. No contrast. The engraving vanishes. You see a smooth silver blob with maybe a faint texture.
To capture engraving you need directional light that rakes across the surface at a low angle, so the raised lines cast tiny shadows into the recesses. This is called grazing light, and it is the same technique archeologists use to photograph inscriptions on stone. The angle of the light determines how deep the shadows are and how prominent the engraving reads.
The trade-off is that grazing light is hard light. And hard light on silver creates the glare and hotspot problems we are always trying to avoid. So the entire skill of engraved silver photography is balancing these two needs: enough directionality to read the engraving, enough softness to keep the metal from blowing out.
The Two-Light Method I Use for Engraving
After a lot of trial and error I settled on a two-light method that handles most engraved silver. It is not the only way, but it is the most repeatable one I have found.
Light one is the raking light. A small, relatively hard light source placed low and to the side of the piece, aimed across the surface at maybe 15 to 25 degrees from horizontal. This is the light that creates the shadows in the engraving. I use a Godox SL60W with a small reflector dish, no softbox, and a sheet of diffusion held about six inches from the piece to take the hardest edge off without killing the directionality. The diffusion matters. Fully hard light gives you harsh shadows that look gritty. Too soft and you lose the engraving again. You want a middle ground.
Light two is the fill. A large soft light from above and slightly opposite to the raking light, at low power. This lifts the shadows so they do not go pure black, and it puts a clean highlight on the raised silver so the piece still reads as shiny. I use a 60×60 softbox with the power set about two stops under the raking light. The ratio between the two lights is the main variable. More raking light equals more engraving contrast but more glare risk. More fill equals a cleaner look but flatter engraving. I start at 2:1 and adjust from there.
Direction of the Rake Matters More Than Power
The direction the raking light comes from relative to the engraving is the most important variable, and it is the one nobody talks about. If your engraving is a radial pattern, like a guilloche or a sunburst, you want the rake to come from the side that makes the radial lines cast shadows perpendicular to themselves. If the light runs along the lines, no shadows. If the light crosses the lines, shadows. I spend more time rotating the piece under the raking light, watching the engraving appear and disappear, than I do on any other part of the setup.
For script engraving, like a name or a date, the rake should come from the top of the letters, perpendicular to the main strokes. For decorative scrollwork, experiment. Some pieces look best with the rake following the main curve of the design. Others look best with the rake cutting across it. There is no rule. You look through the viewfinder and you rotate until the engraving reads.
Camera and Lens Choices for Engraving
For engraved silver you need real macro capability. A close-focusing lens is not the same as a true macro lens. The Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro G is my workhorse and it goes to 1:1 magnification, meaning a 24mm sensor width fills the frame with a 24mm object. That is enough to fill the frame with a signet ring face. For smaller engravings I add a 1.4x teleconverter, which gets me to 1.4:1. Beyond that you are entering microscope territory and the working distance becomes impractical.
Aperture for engraving shots is a real compromise. At macro distances depth of field is razor thin. At f/2.8 a signet ring face has maybe a millimeter of acceptable focus. You will not get the whole engraving sharp. The temptation is to stop down to f/22 or f/32 to get everything in focus, but at those apertures diffraction softens the image and the fine detail you are trying to capture gets mushy. The sweet spot for most macro lenses is around f/11 to f/16. You accept that you cannot get the entire curved surface sharp and you either focus-stack or you choose your focal plane carefully.
I focus-stack most engraved hero shots. I shoot a series of images at f/11, moving the focus plane through the engraving in tiny increments, and merge them in Helicon Focus. A typical signet ring face takes 8 to 15 frames. It is slow but the result is a fully sharp engraving with no diffraction softening. For catalog work where I am shooting 30 pieces, I skip the stack and just pick the focal plane that captures the most important part of the engraving, usually the center.
ISO, Shutter, and the Noise Problem in Shadows
Engraving lives in shadows. The recessed lines are the darkest parts of the image. If you shoot at high ISO, the shadows get noisy and the engraving turns into a grainy mess that no amount of editing will fully fix. I shoot at ISO 100, always. On a tripod with continuous light, shutter speed is free, so there is no reason to raise ISO.
If I am using strobes instead of continuous light, I sync at 1/200 and shoot at ISO 100, f/11, with the strobe power set to whatever gives me correct exposure. Strobes freeze motion so I do not worry about vibration. With continuous LED I shoot at 1/4 to 1 second, and I use a 2-second self-timer or a remote shutter to avoid camera shake. A cable release is fine. The phone app works too.
Capturing Oxidized Engraving Versus Bright-Cut Engraving
This distinction matters and most guides ignore it. There are two main styles of engraved silver and they need different lighting.
Oxidized Engraving
This is where the recessed lines have been blackened with a patina, like liver of sulfur or a chemical oxidation. The contrast comes from the dark recesses against the bright silver raised areas. This is actually the easier of the two to photograph because the contrast is built into the piece. You do not need aggressive raking light. A large soft light from above will read the engraving fine because the dark lines are physically dark, not shadow-dark. I treat oxidized engraving like regular silver and just make sure I have enough fill to keep the recesses from going pure black. Sometimes pure black is fine for drama, but usually you want to see a little detail in the black.
Bright-Cut Engraving
This is where the engraver has cut into the silver and polished the recesses bright, so the engraving shows up as a difference in the angle of reflection, not as a difference in tone. This is much harder to photograph because the contrast depends entirely on the lighting. Get the light wrong and bright-cut engraving is invisible. Get it right and it glows. This is where the raking light method really earns its keep. You are creating the contrast with your light, not capturing contrast that exists on the piece.
A lot of high-end lhcjewelry.com/ silver uses bright-cut or chased techniques, and these pieces are the ones that frustrate photographers. The trick is to move the raking light slowly while watching the engraving through the viewfinder. You will see the engraving appear and disappear as the angle changes. Find the angle where the engraving is most legible and lock the light there. It is genuinely a few degrees of rotation that separates a great shot from a blank one.
The Reflection Problem Inside Engraving
Here is a subtle one that took me a year to figure out. The recessed lines of engraving are tiny curved mirrors. If your raking light is visible to the recesses, you get bright reflections inside the engraving that compete with the shadows you are trying to create. The fix is to make sure the raking light source, as seen from the engraving, is a large soft shape rather than a small bright one. A small bare bulb will give you pinpoints of reflection inside every engraved line. A large diffused source gives you a soft wash.
I achieve this by using a piece of diffusion material between the hard light and the piece, placed close to the piece. The diffusion becomes the visible light source to the engraving, and because it is large and soft, the reflections inside the lines are soft and do not overpower the shadows. This is the same principle as lighting smooth silver, just applied at the scale of millimeters.
Focus Stacking in Practice
If you are shooting engraved silver for hero images or print, focus stacking is worth learning. Here is my workflow.
- Set up the shot with the raking light and fill, compose, and lock everything down. Tripod, lights, piece, all taped or clamped.
- Switch the lens to manual focus.
- Focus on the nearest point of the engraving that needs to be sharp. Take a shot.
- Rotate the focus ring a tiny amount toward farther focus. How tiny depends on the aperture and magnification, but at f/11 and 1:1 I move about a quarter turn of the fine focus ring per shot.
- Continue until you have covered the entire depth of the engraving.
- Check the sequence on a computer screen, zoomed in, to make sure there are no gaps where focus fell between two shots. If there are gaps, reshoot the sequence with smaller increments.
- Load the images into Helicon Focus or Zerene Stacker. I prefer Helicon for jewelry because its method B handles the smooth gradients on silver better than method A.
- Review the merged image for artifacts. Focus stacking software sometimes makes mistakes along edges, and on silver these show up as weird halos or doubled lines. If you see them, try the other stacking method or retouch the problem areas manually from a single source frame.
It is slow. A focus-stacked engraved ring takes me about 20 minutes from setup to final merged file. But the result is a level of detail you cannot get any other way, and for a piece a customer is paying good money for, that detail sells.
Backgrounds and Presentation for Engraved Pieces
Engraved silver wants a background that does not compete. I shoot most engraved pieces on a dark grey or black matte surface because the dark background lets the bright engraving glow. The dark background also gives the raking light something to fall off into, so the edges of the piece are defined by the transition from bright silver to dark background.
I avoid white backgrounds for engraved hero shots because the white reflects up into the engraving and washes out the contrast. White is fine for a clean catalog shot where the engraving is oxidized and visible regardless, but for bright-cut work, go dark.
Angles That Show Engraving Best
Straight overhead is the obvious angle for a flat engraved piece like a pendant or a signet ring face, and it is usually the right one. But you should also shoot a 30 to 45 degree angle for pieces where the engraving wraps or where the curve of the piece matters. On a curved cuff, the engraving follows the curve and a straight overhead shot distorts it. A slight angle preserves the curve and shows how the engraving flows.
For rings with engraved shanks, shoot the ring standing up on its band, with the engraving facing the camera. You will need to support the ring, either with a tiny bit of wax or a ring stand hidden behind. The challenge is that a standing ring reflects everything in front of it, including the camera. Use the black-card-with-a-hole trick. Cut a slot in a black card, put the lens through it, and place the card close to the ring. The card becomes the reflection, giving you a clean dark background on the silver with just a small dark dot where the lens is.
Editing Engraved Silver
I will keep this short because there is a full editing guide elsewhere, but engraving has a few specific editing needs. The main one is local contrast. Engraving reads as contrast, so a gentle clarity or dehaze adjustment in Lightroom, applied locally with a brush, can bring out detail that is barely visible. Do not overdo it. Too much clarity makes the silver look crunchy and fake. I use a brush set to about plus 15 clarity and plus 10 texture, painted only on the engraved area.
The other editing step is shadow recovery. If the recesses of the engraving went too dark, lift the shadows locally. If you lifted them too far in camera with too much fill, pull them down. The goal is to see detail in the engraving without losing the contrast that makes it read as engraving. There is no formula. You look at it and you adjust until it looks like the piece looks in your hand.
Common Mistakes I See
- Using a ring light or a tent for engraved silver. Both give omnidirectional soft light that kills the directional shadows engraving needs. Stop.
- Stopping down to f/32 to get everything sharp. Diffraction softens the engraving more than the depth of field helps. Focus stack instead.
- Lighting from straight above. The engraving disappears. Always rake from the side.
- Using auto white balance under mixed light. The shadows in the engraving pick up color casts badly. Set custom white balance.
- Over-cleaning oxidized engraving. The patina is the design. Do not polish it out before shooting, and do not edit it out after.
- Not checking focus at 100 percent zoom on camera. Engraving is tiny. What looks sharp on the camera screen is often soft when you open it on a monitor.
The Cheat Sheet for Engraved Silver
- Use a low-angle raking light from the side to create shadows in the engraving.
- Add a soft fill from above at about 2 stops under the rake to lift shadows without flattening.
- Rotate the piece under the rake until the engraving reads. Direction matters more than power.
- Shoot at ISO 100, f/11 to f/16, on a tripod, in RAW.
- Use a true macro lens. A close-focusing lens is not enough.
- Focus stack for hero shots. Single shot for catalog.
- Diffuse the raking light slightly to avoid pinpoint reflections inside the engraving.
- Use a dark background to let the engraving glow.
Engraved silver is the test of whether you actually understand light. Smooth silver rewards a big soft source. Engraved silver punishes it. The skill is in balancing a directional light that reveals texture against a soft light that keeps the metal clean, and knowing which pieces want more of which. Once you can read an engraved piece, rotate it under your raking light, and find that one angle where the design suddenly appears, you will never shoot engraving the same way. It is one of the most satisfying moments in jewelry photography, and it is worth the two weekends I lost figuring it out.
