Notice I did not list a flash. I shoot silver with continuous light almost exclusively because I can see the reflection in real time and move things around until the glare disappears. Shoot in RAW. Always. Silver has very little tonal range between highlight and shadow when the light is soft, and you will want every bit of latitude when you edit. JPEGs from the camera crush the subtle gradient in the metal and you cannot get it back.

Rings are the worst offender for glare because the band is a curved mirror that wraps all the way around. The top of the band usually reflects the white ceiling or your softbox and blows out. Lock focus on the brightest part of the jewelry, then manually pull exposure down until the highlights on the metal are not pure white. You want them bright but with detail. If you can still see the shape of the reflection in the brightest part of the metal, you are in the right zone. Turn off HDR. HDR on phones brightens shadows and pulls down highlights in a way that makes silver look flat and muddy. Shoot in the phone’s RAW or ProRAW mode if your device supports it.
